Want to extend the life of your freshly colored hair?  Color-safe shampoos are a great way to help with this. They’re much gentler than typical shampoos without harsh ingredients and detergents. It’s important to understand that all hair color will fade eventually; however, a color-safe shampoo can slow down the process.

What is color-safe shampoo?

Color-safe shampoos help keep color-treated hair from fading, and they maintain the color over a longer period of time than regular shampoos. Many, like our Wash Color Care Shampoo, are specially formulated to give color-treated hair a healthy shine and keep it moisturized and well-nourished. This is because they are made from milder ingredients than regular shampoos, have conditioning properties, and may even contain color-enhancing or neutralizing dyes.

Is it OK to use color-protection shampoo if my hair isn’t dyed?

Even if your hair is not color-treated, color-protection shampoos are great products because they won’t do anything to harm your hair. As a matter of fact, since they include heavy moisturizers to replenish treated tresses, and proteins to prevent further damage, they are actually much healthier than typical shampoos. Our Wash Color Kind Shampoo is infused with a blend of Coconut Oil, Olive Oil and Hibiscus Extract to soften while gently cleansing. It’s also less astringent than regular products, so your hair is less likely to break or frizz.

What makes a shampoo color-safe?

Color-safe shampoo is formulated with ingredients that are gentle enough to keep color looking vibrant longer by not removing the color deposits from the hair. This allows the shampoo to preserve the color.

Color-safe shampoos also contain ingredients and moisturizers that condition and keep chemically-treated hair shiny and full of luster. For example, our Wash Color Kind Shampoo has a combination of Sodium PCA and Sodium Lactate, together with amino acids, supports a healthy state of hair and imparts immediately visible brilliance and luster to the hair strands. Followed by our Rinse Color Kind Conditioner, hair is strengthened, soft, and manageable while retaining hair color.

Can you use regular shampoo on colored hair?

You can easily use regular shampoo on dyed or bleached hair, but the color is more likely to be stripped out faster. This can also cause weird and undesirable side effects such as brassiness or other changes to the color as the shampoo and hair dye react.

What ingredient in shampoo is bad for color treated hair?

There are a group of ingredients, commonly referred to as either sulfates or surfactants, that will dramatically reduce the sheen and vibrancy of your color. That’s why all of our products are free of these ingredients.

In order to achieve color longevity, the hair cuticles must remain closed. Sulfates, such as sodium laureth sulfate, ammonium lauryl sulfate, and sodium lauryl sulfate, break through the cuticles and allow color molecules to leak out. Clarifying shampoo products can even completely strip the color from hair in as little as three washes!

What is the difference between color-treated shampoo and regular shampoo?

In essence, the two real differences between regular shampoos and color-safe products are that the latter prevents the cuticle from lifting and the color seeping out and the former does not. Color-safe shampoos also typically contain more conditioning ingredients to treat processed hair.

How long will color-safe shampoo extend my color?

It all depends on the color-safe shampoo that you use and its ingredients, as well as the dye or bleach product in your hair, plus the length and texture of your hair. Our shampoo and conditioner can extend color treatment from a couple weeks to over a month, which is usually when you might consider a touch-up.
